Learning To Manage Distractions

MB Text 5-17-2015 (Distractions)I have heard many people call the times we live in, the age of information. This may be true to a large degree. While we are living in precarious times, new information seems to be quickly outdated. The more informed the public becomes, the more problems seem to exist, brought about by the new information. In fact, the greater the technological advancement the more distracted we become.

I call this age, “The age of great distractions.” People are rarely able to maintain any focus today, and the medical field has documented this. A.D.D., better known as Attention Deficient Disorder, is rocking both the young and aging of the Western World, making stakeholders of pharmaceutical companies supplying the drugs for treatment, very wealthy.

It used to be common culture for everyone to read the newspaper on the subway train while going to work. Advertisements were posted on city streets and in shopping malls, etc. Now a large majority of the population, seemingly everywhere, can be found with their heads buried in their mobile devices scanning the internet, their emails, Twitter accounts, and Facebook. If this is not the age of distraction, I don’t know what is.

Technology is the base cause for an increase in traffic fatalities in the United States, because texting and driving has proved to be just as deadly as drinking and driving. So although technology is good, it breeds other problems that arise as a result of new information. The faster the newer products, and things made more convenient, the more complex our problems become.

I was driving past a High School that had recently released its students from class. When I looked at the youth leaving the building, over half had their heads buried in their cell phones. Can you believe that a child walked into the street without looking and nearly got hit because he was reading something on his phone?

These are just a few examples. There are other distractions which also make it difficult to get any real work done on the job. Computers have taken all the thinking ability of humanity, leaving most Americans scatterbrained and unable to figure out or solve problems on their own. Rather than deriving from a person’s heart, the media influences dreams and ambitions via movies, advertising, and periodicals, distracting people from their true purpose.

How do you distract a man with a dream? Give him another one. People are moving from one career to another without realizing what is creating all this movement without motive. People are getting college degrees in business management, yet pursuing jobs in healthcare facilities. One person I’m familiar with moved from working as a logistics manager to a car salesperson, from that to a healthcare facilitator, and from that to a Wal-Mart employee, all in two years.

If you don’t learn to do one thing well, you will not be able to do anything well enough! Watch out for distractions because they are seriously looking to pull your attention elsewhere.

Seriously consider that your ability to get focused, and stay that way, is more than just an advisable thing to develop and nurture—it’s a decisive aspect of your success or failure. Getting things done the right way and on schedule is absolutely imperative. Staying keenly centered is the key to getting things done, because you learn to work smarter rather than harder.

Take advantage of opportunities to develop ways to help yourself stay focused at work, school, and even in your daily life, by managing your distractions and reducing the possibility for procrastination. This will help you eliminate most setbacks and delays so work is not merely thought of, but actually completed.

Increasing Your Value Without Lowering Your Quality

value-post-200What part of you do you believe you value the most—the outward appearance or the inward qualities? If you were a product or merchandise, would you be worth selling to your high-end clients? Do you consider yourself a rare piece of fine art whose price is non-negotiable?

While living in this highly technological culture, along with its groundbreaking medical cures and research, new advancement in plastic surgery and scientific breakthroughs, people are less concerned with character than they are with appearance. Just think; if you don’t like your weight, gastric bypass or one of the other ways to get around eating healthy and daily exercise is available. If you think your lips are too thin, apply a small dosage of collagen to fatten them up. Or if your hair is not long enough or full enough, there are weaves, extensions and other hair and scalp products that makes people question if what is on the head is real or not.

The American business industry aggressively pushes commercials and advertising on their viewership suggesting that external appearance is far more important than inner qualities. Therefore, it is no small wonder why companies, inventors, and the clothing industry are spending billions annually while making a mad dash to either steer mainstream values or create new ways to feed the ‘Me’ culture. The ‘Me’ culture is nothing but a masking of the ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ tradition.

But what about the spiritual qualities that allows a person to have a sense of mental stability? Do real inner qualities matter in today’s society where people are more concerned with breaking the rules to get ahead? Obviously, this is a dog-eat-dog culture where the weak are swallowed up and the strong are mastered by the rich. However, everyone doesn’t live their lives or conduct business like most people today who believe the bottom line is money exclusively.

In the movie Jerry Maguire, Jerry was a model sports agent, eager to do just about anything he could to get the largest possible contracts for his clients, with of course, a nice commission for himself. Until, one day, he suddenly has qualms about what he’s actually doing. When he voices these misgivings in writing, he eventually loses his job and all of his clients are stripped from him, leaving him with a secretary who believes in what he’s doing, and Rod Tidwell, a football player who he hopes will show as much of his heart on the football field as he does for his family. Jerry then looks to resurrect his career while still staying true to himself.

Yes, we are all a product or merchandise that has value. Daily, we exchange portions of our intellect, time, and energy for a wage or salary. Each individual makes their own determination of how much money they will agree to accept in exchange for their abilities. However, what I may personally agree to for a wage doesn’t determine my intrinsic value. A 1960’s Zenith television commercial slogan was, “The quality goes in before the name goes on.” Placing more value on the inside, personally determines the value externally.

Look at building your business with character to attract quality customers whose purchasing power will remain, rather than building the appearance only which contains no substance. Build your family with qualities that creates stability and produce off-spring with good character. Establish relationships that are not predicated on what you can give to each other, but what you can be to one another.

What would you rather have as a business owner, the ability to attract 5,000 customers in a week to buy your product that you know has no real substance, or 500 customers who love your product and service, and who go out and tell their friends about it? In the long run, you will eventually turn 500 happy customers into 500,000 customers over time. Intrinsic qualities will prove to be far more lucrative than outer appearances.

After removing the cosmetics and putting on a few extra pounds, will your spouse want what you use to be or will they still be in love with who you truly are. The quality truly must go in before you think about placing yourself on the market. Remember, all that glitter’s is not gold!

World Shaper or Moneymaker

Are you an asset or a liability? Allow me to rephrase the question. Do those who know you consider you an asset or a liability? Have you grown in the last five years to gain more knowledge and wisdom to aid your church in reaching the community in order to grow or to help guide those who may need assistance in life or your employer who desires for his or her company to grow? Can you answer these questions without automatically assuming that you are an asset without actually examining your output? What good is your life if you are not doing something to help someone to live a better life?

I can view the daily activities in people’s lives and tell if they are world shapers or simply moneymakers. In other words, the moneymaker is only interested in building a career and making as much money by avoiding any personal contact that may hinder their chances of making a dollar.

On the other hand, a world shaper is someone who looks to be a blessing in the lives of others by committing themselves to wisdom and knowledge so that they can be properly equipped for the challenges others may face as well as themselves. Paul in the Bible said, “If we live only to ourselves we are men most miserable.”

People have lost a sense of purpose as to why they should do things. Money should not be the number one culprit for why you work, have a business, and or want to meet people. This, my friend, only indicates how shallow your life actually is.

I have dedicated my life to a life of service without the promise of making a lot of money. In fact, the proof of my servitude is in the price I pay daily. I do not look for the pats on the back or the nice gestures of thank you, but simply how can I do a better job the next time in being a blessing in someone’s life. This is not an indication that I should not be wealthy.

On the contrary, my life attracts wealth because I am dedicated to the lives of others. I do not serve money; I serve God and people. I strongly believe that a life of servitude cannot be measured in dollars and cents. The number one cause for people refusing to live out God’s determination for their lives is how much money they think they will lose in order to obey God. Jesus said, “Man cannot serve both God and money…” If you cannot give it, you do not own it, it owns you. Live a life of service to God and man and God will ensure that your life is filled with the true treasures that only He can provide.
