Breaking The Cycle of Average

Breaking the cycle of average textHere is a line from the movie Sister Act II, starring Whoopi Goldberg, which served as a motivation for me to thrive in life; “If you want to be somebody, and you want go somewhere… you better wake up and pay attention.”

There is a very large class of people in society that you want to stay as far away from their influence as possible unless you want to be a part of them. Whether you heard of this group or not, the most important thing about this group is that you do not want to be a part of it. People in this group are not necessarily bad people, but if anyone from this group has your undivided attention, they may be a deterrent to your progress. This consortium of people is commonly known as ‘The Average 90.’ This is a group of people who may be stuck in a box without any desire or passion to break out of it. They avoid risk, abandon conflict, and run from any challenge that requires more than a mediocre effort.

Are you the kind of person who will give that little extra to achieve more than what the average person can accomplish? Average people live in the shadow of excellence—always admiring the achievements of others who are not as gifted, but apparently more daring. You don’t have to be the smartest or strongest person to achieve greatness. Have you noticed that the cleverest people in school are usually not those who are the most successful or who leave their mark on life? If you want to be better than what you presently are, you must do things differently or better than others whose standard is ‘just enough to get by’.

Aim beyond what you think you are capable of achieving. Challenge yourself to develop a total disregard for where your abilities end, and turn enthusiasm into the energy that moves you beyond your fears. Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you. You might succeed if nobody else believes in you, but you will never succeed if you don’t believe in yourself.

The difference between the average 90 and the uncommon 10 is that the average 90 will wait for opportunities to be exposed, while the uncommon 10 will create them. It takes perseverance to break away from the mediocre and to do something other than what most people are willing to do, which is to get a job…a job that pays them below their skill level. However, this person’s mindset may just be minimum wage. Isn’t it ironic that a person can be so talented and gifted, but their personal drive is like the power of a gas operated scooter and not that of a Ferrari.

Have you ever been at a point in life when you wanted to give up, throw in the towel, and quit for the rest of your life? Remember as children, when we played baseball and we failed to catch the ball, or being embarrassed at school for liking someone who didn’t like you? How about when you felt you were the most qualified for a position on your job but you were passed over because you just blended in? All of these, and more, real-life scenarios have been used as the culprit for quitting, or becoming stagnated, where you no longer gave a hundred percent effort.

Life is about always moving forward, no matter what—it’s not becoming stagnated by some emotional letdown like a child having a temper tantrum when something doesn’t work out the way you planned it. Finding excuses for quitting at life or giving up on your dream will give most people immediate access to depression and anxiety, which oftentimes, leads to self-destruction. However, those who have a resolve in their heart realize that quitting is not an option. Disappointments, frustrations, and failures, are all a part of life. Unfortunately, we cannot always escape these life factors, because while we are learning how to live, we are also learning how to succeed at whatever is before us. These life lessons inevitably lead to mistakes. How you deal with your errors will either demonstrate your mental stability and your inner strength, or the lack thereof.

For life to work in its most simplistic form, a person must understand that it takes wisdom to fast forward, intelligence to pause, integrity of strength to play, but foolishness to go backwards. If you can wrap your head around these for components, which can help in some way to make sense out of life, then you just might discover that the purpose of life really does make a lot of sense. You were not designed to be average.

No one comes into this world and begins life counting backwards by years, months, weeks, and days. All of humanity is designed for forward mobility, and we start, not at one, but at start. A person cannot set goals for the days they’ve already lived; they can only set goals for days that have not yet been lived. This suggests that there is a Mastermind and Designer who created us to live forward, not to die in backward mode.

Do yourself a favor and rid your mind of mediocrity. Examine your efforts, challenge your strength and intelligence, and take the limits of being average and throw it as far away from you as possible. Refuse to accept what life throws at you, like most people do, and throw at life what direction you believe God has designed you to go.

I understand that it is your life to do with as you please; however, it is not your right to make other people feel guilty because they don’t want to live their lives alongside yours. It is difficult to follow a parked car. If you are not going anywhere in life and your movement is synchronized with those who are average, can you please move out of the way so others can get by you without the possibility of tripping over you? If you want to waste your time, why would I want to give you the opportunity of wasting mine?

To break away from the norm you have been traveling, you have to move through the crowd of people to create your own path. People of destiny will make life happen; average people will wait for life to happen.

Jesus said, “If they compel you to go one mile, go two.”

Your Greatness is a Decision Away

great-thinkersIn all my years of being on this planet, there is one strike of light that seems to be turned on more than in any other subject matter. And, while most people my age are thinking about retiring, I am digging deeper to fully discover myself and my true potential. The longer I live, visit other countries and meet new people, the more I notice what appears to be a common thread among mostly everyone. This is especially true among those living in the atmosphere and mindset of western culture. That thread is a deep inner fear of unveiling who they really are and the things they are potentially able to perform.

It seems like people are frightened of the sheer fact of being who they would really like to be. Many of these people continue to live out their years under the guise of other people’s thoughts and expectations of them. This mindset is like a double edged sword. These people are too afraid to move into the consciousness of who they truly are, and too terrified of losing their friends and love ones if they were to move towards changing their lives. Now this is actually living life between a rock and a hard place.

Each person must at some point in their life, come to the realization that they are capable of greatness. Otherwise, the greatness they are capable of will never be realized during their life time. This is not arrogance, but the humility necessary to acknowledge your status on this planet. You must own who you are. Greatness should be an effortless accomplishment. Instead, it is an absurd notion that a person of assumed limited capability can even think of such a thing.

A person who refuses to stand up and be noticed is really doing not only themselves an injustice, but the entire world. To recognize your unique status on Earth is to realize that this power is in you, but not of you. A person doesn’t have less potential greatness residing in them than any other person. We all have different gifts. Some people use a greater proportion of their believability with their gift. It is the same gift, but with greater usage ability than mediocrity.

Reflect for a moment, on the people who have exploded out of the fabric of pure possibility. People, such as Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ben Franklin…now, imagine your name is among this list of great possibility thinkers and doers. It is hard to imagine all the extraordinary talent that has been wasted among oppressed people, including women—talent that did not rise because the social condition didn’t make it possible. Think of the talent in all people, regardless of race or color—abilities that we have yet to see on this planet because we have not given ourselves the permission to stand in our greatness.

I believe that we have arrived at this moment for such a time as this…to make a difference by first accepting our own greatness without comparison, and to believe in the inherent power God has placed in us. The first person who has to listen to you, is you. Speak out loud, make yourself known, and shine. Even the Bible says to let your light shine. Shine your spotlight on someone and rescue them from the darkness of their self-defeated mentality. Arise; the glory of God has risen upon you.

Living Beyond Mere Existence

Living Beyond Mere Existence
Live an Exciting Life!
The only thing that stands between a person and what he wants from life is often merely the will to do it and the faith to believe that it is possible. A living faith cannot be manufactured by the rule of majority.

Faith walkers will never blend in with those who govern their life by logic. Reason is good when the situation is humanly possible; faith is called for when it’s not. A faith that hasn’t been tested can’t be trusted. Faith is a passionate intuition and he who has faith has an inward reservoir of courage, hope, confidence, and calmness. Prayer may be the way to reach heaven, but faith is the key to unlock its door.

Beyond Standard
Beyond Standard
I have never met a person whose endeavor was to be average. Average is not a goal because it takes no extraordinary ability to achieve it.

Standard or minimum requirement is the new ‘average’ which is the usual, the ordinary kind, or the least acceptable quality. It is the ‘typical’ accepted by the general public. It’s like the old maxim, “It can’t be wrong if everybody is doing it.” Why accept what everyone else does? Is it because it is safe? Do you feel that if you are like everyone else, you can then avoid being negatively discussed by others? Continue reading “Beyond Standard”

Habits of the Self-Motivated

Self Motivated
Oprah Winfrey, Magic Johnson, J.K. Rollins, John Paul DeJoria, Michael Dell

What are you more interested in hearing, well said or well done? Many people do little or nothing to live their dreams, but they are great at trying to instruct others on how to live their dream. The odd thing about this is that these people are first-class at starting something but are quickly discouraged with the slightest opposition or challenge. They have an acute awareness of what to do, but they do not have a reliable competent stamina to plow through the discouragement and disappointments that show up when little or no progress is apparently made. Therefore, knowing what to do is not good enough. It is not what you know; it is what you do with what you know.

There are habits that separate those who are satisfied with an occasional win and those who ‘will’ themselves to win every time. Every effort demands and should be accompanied with a strong unrelenting aggression that gives one the edge when they are apparently outmatched by his or her opponent. Being less talented is not a guaranteed lost. Being stronger, more agile, athletic and even smarter than your opponent is not the prerequisite for success. These important ingredients will serve you well if you are aware of how to use them intelligently to your advantage. Unfortunately, knowledge with the absence of heart and spirit is just a know-it-all who has not developed the resilience to win in life.

What are these polished habits that separate those that simply have a desire to win and those who will themselves to win? Clearly, there must be a difference? Oftentimes, the various patterns of these two characters look similar until you get down to the stretch when the challenge is more intense and the intricacy increases as you approach the finish line. Luck has no place where skill and heart has collaborated to repudiate losing at any level, or with any game. The reason people like Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Vince Lombardi, Terry Bradshaw and presently, Kobe Bryant were and are considered among the best in their field, is that they all hated or hate to lose. What separates these great men from the other very good athletes that played before, during and after their time, is that they won multiple championships.

There are other men and women that fit the description of resilience and resolve that are in other fields. People such as such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, John Paul DeJoria, Larry Ellison, J.K. Rowling, and Michael Dell and there are many others, have beat unbelievable odds to reach the top.

It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste time.
~Henry Ford

Allow me to list a few dynamic habits that will inevitably launch you into the orbit of your success where money is not the issue, but rather the chosen tool used to live your dream. This list starts with endurance, fortitude, tenacity, perseverance, enthusiasm, faith, boldness, mental toughness, courage, determination, consistency, persistence, self-control, creativity, a resistance to pressure, etc. I can go on but it may be a bit too much for you to handle because you may look at these important qualities as requiring far too much time to develop. I cannot, however, leave out the habit of discipline. Discipline is the one quality that can help you as you pursue achievement. Remember greatness is in you, and you will become the great person people will remember.

I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my Definite Purpose in life, therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.

Need A Boost?

Greatness cannot be achieved by tracking the steps of great men or women. If you follow in someone else’s steps, your personal success will only reflect the accomplishments of the one whose footprints you choose to follow. You will simply become a carbon copy of a great original. Following a person with impressive qualities, which you may personally desire to emulate, does not guarantee greatness, but it can help you recognize it. Eventually, the person who follows the trail of a prominent person will one day have to veer off and blaze his or her own trail.

I have learned a great deal during my years under the tutelage of great men, and one valuable lesson was that you cannot trace the steps of a great mentor and follow them to their end because at the conclusion of their course, you will only discover their destiny—not your own. Here is a simpler way to understand my point; you are the rocket ship going into orbit and the booster engine is attached to you. The booster is designed to help you get into space until you can fire up your own engine, detach yourself from the booster so that you can continue your mission and fulfill your purpose. The power exemplified in the booster engine is the years of experience and enormous knowledge and wisdom acquired over the years. Great leaders and mentors want nothing more than to pass on their wealth of knowledge and help propel others to achieve more in their lifetime than the mentor may have accomplished in his.

Understanding this example can be the difference between you wasting energy or preserving it. You see, the booster engine is attached so that the rocket ship can conserve as much energy as possible because its mission will be quite arduous. A father, mentor, or pastor, is the booster engine whose sole purpose is to help you excel. It is presumed that you respect the presence and recognize the magnitude and enormity of the mentor’s wisdom and knowledge. If not, you will never fully adhere to the instructions that can help you with your personal life construction.

Invest your time in people who will give the greatest return.
John Maxwell

Wise and successful people are in such demand that a protégé should always consider their time as precious and highly valuable. Most people that are young in knowledge and experience (which does not mean that these people are necessarily young in age) but rather people who think that successful people have nothing else to do but listen to a bumbling idiot voice his or her knowledge about nothing. My solemn recommendation, for people seeking wise counsel from someone who is successful, is ask your question, shut up, and pay attention while you are in the presence of greatness. Words from the lips of a wise man or woman are like pillars that can support your next level.

To desire greatness is a lofty thought not a bad one. Usually, people who have achieved greatness did not ask for it, nor did they actually realize that they have obtained it. Great leaders are great givers, and unless you are willing to tax your time, energy and resources, you simply will want the title of greatness at other people’s expense.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Vince Lombardi are two people I would love to talk to if they were alive today. I realize one was a preacher and the other was a football coach, however, the vastness of their knowledge concerning winning was extraordinary. Developing Strategies to win at anything and executing that strategy is pertinent to winning in life. These two men were from different ends of the spectrum but so very much alike. Both of them believed in the power of people working as one; they both believed in using drastic measures to achieve their goal; and they both gave their lives to what they believed. These two extraordinary men never separated what they did in life, apart from their life. You are what you do, and what you do speaks volume as to who you are.

See You At the Top!

Discover your Passion

Are you living your passion?

Have you committed to developing a winning strategy to cultivate greatness?

No person can reach his or her full capacity without being committed to achieving it. Success should not be measured by terms of perfection, which can hardly be sustained, but rather by progress.

When your endeavors fail to attain the status of flawlessness, progress should be the expected outcome. Improvement is insignificant gain when your goals are gargantuan. Therefore, settle on realistic goals based on your passion, which is fueled by your inspiration. Avoid setting goals that are easily achieved. Nor should you set your expectations so far out of reach that you would need wings to reach them.

Believable goals are far better than inconceivable ones. The evidence of commitment is what drives the athlete to perform at their personal best when they have to play extra endings of baseball, shoot one more basketball in overtime or fight one more round when it appears that they are losing the fight.

You should not be overly concern with winning by a landslide, than just winning. Being victorious in any area of life, whether by a large spread or an inch, is still winning. Let’s face it; there are no short cuts to success.

Oftentimes, people want to achieve success at basement bargain prices without investing their time, energy, and resources. My friend, you must discover what is so personally valuable to you that it unleashes the fight in you. It makes you lose yourself in the moment of someone’s audacity to try to take something from you. You growl at the challenges, as a female dog will growl when strangers are trying to take its pups.

Regardless of how you hear others talk about how dreadful the economy is, rising divorce rates and the humongous loss of jobs, do not allow these hopeless individuals to weaken your defenses. Continue to fight for your dream of a wonderful marriage, a successful business, and a powerful and fulfilling life. If you can discover your passion in life, it will begin to spill over into other areas of your life as well.
